Philip

I have had one foot in the scientific world and the other in the artistic world through my life. My artistic style developed as a cartoonist for the Harvard Lampoon and as an animator for Hanna-Barbera and other animation houses in Studio City, California. My scientific career is centered on molecular and cellular biology, which has inspired me to create abstract images of cells. Many of these works have been featured on the covers of scientific journals, monographs, and text books.

My pastels represent both real and imagined landscapes, which are rendered en-plein air and completed in studio. My drawings capture often whimsical and unusual images loosely linked to the original setting. I also take this approach with my prints, where original photographic images are printed on impervious papers to create a surreal image facsimile. These works are created in Portland, Oregon, where the landscape provides me endless inspiration.
